RESIDENCY PATHWAYS

Argentina Residency Options Available Right Now

While the Citizenship by Investment program isn't open, several real, currently functioning residency categories are — including investment-based paths that lead to standard naturalization.

Argentina residency options that work today sit under ordinary immigration law (Ley 25.871 and its regulations). They are separate from the stalled Citizenship by Investment framework. Applications run through Migraciones' existing process — typically via RaDEX — and naturalization, if pursued later, follows the standard nationality-law path rather than any investment shortcut around residency.

If you arrived here because Citizenship by Investment is not open, the full status context is on Argentina CBI program status.

How these paths differ from Citizenship by Investment

Citizenship by Investment was framed as a special investment route toward nationality with a different legal architecture — and it is not operational today. The categories on this page are ordinary temporary-residency admissions that Argentina has administered for years under the Migration Law. There is an existing application channel, no dependence on an unlaunched CBI operator tender, and no shortcut around the standard residency period before naturalization eligibility. The tradeoff is simple: this is slower than what Citizenship by Investment promised, but it is real and available today.

Standard naturalization after residency

Argentine nationality law (Ley 346) has long provided that foreigners who establish continuous legal residence may become eligible to apply for naturalization after meeting the statutory residence period — commonly described as two years of continuous legal residence. Naturalization is not automatic: it is a discretionary grant following an application, documentary review, and the authority's decision. Temporary residency can count toward that residence clock; permanent residency is not a prerequisite for eligibility under the standard framework. Confirm how "continuous" residence is applied to your travel pattern with counsel, because physical-presence expectations matter in practice and have been the subject of recent regulatory attention.

Rentista (independent means)

Rentista is a temporary-residency subcategory under Article 23(b) of Ley 25.871 for foreigners who fund their stay in Argentina with their own resources from abroad — typically passive benefits from assets already in their patrimony (for example financial instruments, real estate, or company participations), not remuneration from personal work. Official Migraciones guidance requires proving that the rent equals or exceeds five times the Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil (SMVM), that the income is of the asset/rentista type described above, and that funds enter Argentina through banks or financial institutions authorized by the Central Bank. Filings are started in RaDEX while the applicant is in Argentina. Migraciones' public service page states the residence is granted for one year and is renewable; the Migration Law itself authorizes terms of up to three years, renewable. Exact documentary packages and family rules should be confirmed on the live Migraciones page or with counsel before filing.

Investor (Inversionista)

Inversionista is a temporary-residency subcategory under Article 23(d) of Ley 25.871 for foreigners who contribute their own assets to carry out activities of interest to Argentina. The regulatory framework (Decreto 616/2010) describes a productive, commercial, or services investment, submission of an investment project to the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, proof of lawful origin of funds, and entry of funds through Central Bank–authorized institutions. The Migration Law authorizes temporary residence of up to three years, renewable, with multiple entries. This is not the same as a short business-visit or "negocios" transit stay. Passive property purchase alone is generally not treated as sufficient without a qualifying productive or commercial activity — confirm project design with Migraciones or counsel before committing capital. We are not stating a current dollar or peso figure as a reliable live threshold on this page: the 2010 regulation cites a historic peso minimum that inflation and practice have made unreliable as a standalone rule of thumb.

Slower than CBI promised — real and available today

If your goal is lawful residence now, with a later option to seek naturalization under ordinary nationality rules, Rentista and Inversionista (and other ordinary categories outside this high-level overview) are the functioning routes. They require living inside the existing immigration system: evidence, renewals, and time. They do not depend on Decree 524/2025 program machinery or a Citizenship by Investment operator. For why the investment-citizenship program itself is not a present-day option, use the program status page.
